Social Consciousness
As living beings, we are
constantly told to be conscious and aware of our surroundings. Nature
created a timid animal, agile enough to
escape a hunter , humans who surpassed
all the organisms and is capable of hunting down anything. We humans, are now expected to perform in the most predictable way and be aware of our
societal norms . Social consciously does not simply demand that you obey your
elders and live as in expected from you; it demands that you extend your compassion
towards society as a whole. In India, the word ‘society’ is used in the most
negative context, questions such as ‘Do you think our society will accept this?’,
‘how will you answer the society?’ .But are we, as “the society” in India doing
anything other than out-casting our own people?
Social consciousness is all about
being aware about our surroundings in terms of the issues, new upliftments needed
or implemented and what needs to be uprooted for better prospects. One needs to
be in touch with his roots first and then think of his own wants. Change can be
brought about by even the slightest of compassion, the biggest change being Section 377 that has now legalized the
marriage between equal gender, this was possible because some of us do not want
to be condemned to live in loneliness, they
did not want to be excluded from one of civilisation’s oldest institutions i.e.; marriage. They asked for equal dignity
in the eyes of law and they earned it. I came across an organization at budhwarpeth
called-Saheli ; Saheli helps take care of the children of women working at budhwarpeth who are deemed as an
outcast. Release of a juvenile criminal, denying the stipend of a reserved
category PhD student and many such issues need to be at least addressed by the
people at a wider extent and eventually come about with a solution. We must
pray for the world that is falling apart and not just the broken friendships
and relationships in the cafes that we are so familiar with.
